Firewise WV focuses on creating safe access and defensible space for homes throughout West Virginia built adjacent to woodlands in high fire danger areas.
- The West Virginia Firewise program, as an extension of Firewise USA, has the following goals:
- Educate the public on measures to minimize property damage or loss from wildfires
- Encourage residents in high-risk areas to adopt and implement wildfire safety guidelines
- Assist communities with the development of wildfire risk reduction plans

About Firewise WV
This program focuses on areas of the state having potentially high levels of hazard, risk or value loss should they be impacted by wildland urban interface fires. Firewise WV provides assistance to develop wildfire mitigation plans for certain targeted communities as well as those communities that request assistance.

Informational presentations for community groups, including HOAs
Technical assistance with hazard mitigation projects in cooperating communities
Training opportunities for volunteer fire departments concerning fire risk assessments, fire operations and mitigation

Remove dead leaves, pine needles, tree branches and combustible debris from around your home.
Don’t store firewood on or under porches or decks.
Don’t store machinery such as four-wheelers and lawn mowers under decks or porches.
Use fire-resistant plants around your home, including flowering dogwoods, azaleas and more.
